About

Mother House Studios : Lewisham opened in January 2024 and is rooted in the original Mother House Studio model, founded in 2016 by Dyana Gravina as part of Procreate Project.

The Mother House studio model originated from a grassroots arts organisation born in 2013 as an intersectional feminist proposition aimed at creating systemic change & equity for artists who are mothers and primary care-givers. The pioneering initiative was piloted in 2016 as a unique solution to a proven lack of viable provision that sufficiently supports artists during early parenthood. By adapting existing venues, the model creates inspiring, affordable art studios with integrated care, welcoming children into the workspace.

The approach challenges traditional childcare structures that often separate children from parents and parents from their workspaces. Instead, it fosters an inclusive environment where artistic practice and caregiving coexist, benefiting both artists and their children.
While the model was initially developed to address the systemic inequalities affecting primarily mothers, the project has evolved to embrace all constellations of family and gender identities.

The Lewisham project continues this ethos, offering a collaborative space that supports artist-parents in sustaining their creative identities while navigating the journey of parenthood.
